We can fix that!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>With the amount of iPhone\u2019s that we see for repair every day it is very common to see a iPhone that won\u2019t charge that needs a\u00a0<strong>charging port repair<\/strong>\u00a0or an iPhone that has died and won\u2019t come back on, which is really common and normally requires a simple\u00a0<strong>battery replacement<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve had an influx of iPhones in recently that had us in a bit of confusion. Each user reported that the iPhone was working fine until the battery ran completely dead. They then attempted to charge the iPhone, as they had many times before, and the iPhone appeared\u00a0to be completely dead.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>No life at all.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em>Nothing but a blank screen.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We fully\u00a0diagnose\u00a0each and every device that comes into us before doing anything with it, regardless of how simple the service is. During\u00a0the diagnostics for these devices we found that with a new battery fitted the iPhone turned on and charged as per normal. We thought we had the cure!<\/p>\n<p>We were wrong.<\/p>\n<p>With each of these iPhone\u2019s if we left them to run until the battery was completely empty the phone would not switch on, it would appear to be completely dead once again. That is until a new battery was fitted once again!<\/p>\n<p>After a few hours of fitting and waiting for batteries to discharge and seeing the same results we decided this was something a bit more sinister and got one of the logic boards under a microscope to see what the issue could be.<\/p>\n<p>After\u00a0taking a look at the iPhone\u00a0circuit diagram and data sheet we tracked the issue down to a component\u00a0called the <strong>U2 IC or Tristar<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This IC controls the charge to the battery, runs the power to the sleep\/wake button, controls the USB function and regulates the charging to the power IC that charges the iPhone.<\/p>\n<p>The symptoms of a faulty U2 IC \/Tristar\/Hydra (no function, rapid battery drain, etc.) are mostly similar to those of a faulty battery. This is why differential diagnosis between battery and logic board problems is very complicated. If a faulty Tristar is not discovered and a new battery is installed instead, this may bring the phone back to life instantly. However, the new battery will be damaged within weeks if not days and the symptoms will return. This not only results in damaged batteries but also in unsatisfied customers.<\/p>\n<p>Some\u00a0symptoms of an iPhone that has a faulty U2 IC are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Battery won\u2019t charge beyond 1%<\/li>\n<li>Phone will not switch on.<\/li>\n<li>Phone automatically powers itself off<\/li>\n<li>Battery Percentage randomly increases or decreases.<\/li>\n<li>When the battery is removed and\u00a0the iPhone is placed on charge it does not boot to the Apple logo<\/li>\n<li>When the iPhone is put onto charge the screen stays blank and the iPhone remains lifeless<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The U2 IC also known as a Tristar<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tristar (or &#8220;Hydra&#8221; in newer models) is an IC on the logic board of iDevices that is used for authentication of USB devices. Its purpose is to check the authenticity of any attached cable or device via the Lightning Port and to allow or deny data transmission or charging processes. By using uncertified accessories (such as knock-off data cables or Lightning-port-fans) this very sensitive chip can easily get damaged and stop working correctly.<\/p>\n<p>The cause of this component becoming faulty is really quite simple \u2013 third party USB leads!<\/p>\n<p>The original Apple chargers and USB leads regulate the voltage and current to a level that protects your valuable iPhone and prevents it from damage.<\/p>\n<p>Charging your iPhone using a third party USB lead that does not regulate this as much allows for larger variables in voltage and current, this then damages the U2 IC and can leave you with a seemingly dead iPhone.<\/p>\n<h3>Diagnostic<\/h3>\n<p>Tristar tester can show typical Tristar\/Hydra faults within seconds without opening the device. This enables us to detect these errors before or while checking the device in for repair and allows us to discuss the needed repairs right at the point of sale, avoiding unneeded repairs (such as battery replacements) and wasted parts.<\/p>\n<h3>Solution<\/h3>\n<p>We\u2019re now happy to offer a repair service to replace the u2 IC \/ Tristar. This is a board level repair which replaces the component on the main Logic Board.<\/p>\n<p>We are really glad that we can take iPhone repairs to the level of expertise that you won\u2019t find at your local computer repair shop or from a friend on facebook.
